Our first field trips are in October, both centered around Opera and geared specifically toward young singers - WE NEED CHAPERONES!!! Please email me ASAP if you can chaperone!

Beginning and Intermediate Choir will be attending the Chicago Lyric Opera’s performance of “Rhonda and the Fossil Hunt” at Senn High School. We leave at 9AM and will return by 12PM. We need 12-13 chaperones for this trip, and there is no cost to students.

Concert Choir will be taking a backstage tour of the Lyric Opera House on October 24th. We will leave at 10AM and return by 1PM. We need 5-6 chaperones for this trip and the cost is $7 per person. If this is a financial hardship, please contact me and we will work it out so your student can attend!

COMMUNICATION:
Our primary means of communication will be through Google Classroom and email. I can always be reached at jsoliveira@cps.edu, but it is essential your student also joins Google Classroom so they do not miss out on important announcements and information! If you are unable to join via invitation that I sent earlier in the year, here’s how you can find our class:

  1. Visit www.classroom.google.com

  2. Log in using your CPS email. If you do not know what this is, please contact your homeroom teacher and they will be able to assist you!

  3. If you have already joined, you will see a box that says the name of your choir on it. Click on that and you’re in!

  4. If you do not see the box with your choir name on it, click on the + in the top right hand corner and select “join class”.

  5. You will then be prompted to add a class code. Enter it in and you’re good to go! The codes are as follows:

Encore Group:
3A, 4A, 4B (Beginning Choir) -
5C/6C (Intermediate Choir) -
7C/8C (Concert Choir) -

Class Code:
55oeh02

 MUSICAL THEATRE
That’s right folks, you read it here - we are bringing back the annual Spring Musical here at Peterson! Everything is still in the works, so stay tuned for more information. If you are interested in volunteering, PLEASE contact me ASAP - this is a team effort, and there is no such thing as too small of a time investment. From directing, costumes, set design, choreography, marketing, box office, makeup, hair, rehearsal monitors, snacks, meals - there’s no shortage of work to be done and plenty of fun to go around!

ADVOCACY
On a personal note, I would like to thank you for supporting music education for your child. The lifelong benefits your child will obtain through music expand beyond the classroom, and are transferable to every other academic subject. If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of music education, I would encourage you to visit https://nafme.org/advocacy/broader-minded

ABOUT MR OLIVEIRA:
I hail from the San Francisco Bay Area originally, though I have lived in Chicago for 7 years now. My undergraduate degree is in voice performance from University of the Pacific, and my post undergrad teaching license was obtained at Northeastern Illinois University. In my spare time, I’m enjoying playing with my two cats, trying out a new video game, rehearsing for something or traveling with friends. In my career so far I have directed dozens of youth musicals, taught high school choir, directed church choirs, performed professionally across the country and given voice lessons to singer of all ages. Nothing, however, compares to exploring and creating music with young people on a daily basis and I am honored and thrilled to be continuing the legacy of vocal music here at Peterson! IN CLOSING
This is an exciting year for the vocal musical department here at Peterson! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, suggestions or comments. I believe it takes a whole village to raise one child, and I am honored to be a musical part of that village.

Chorally yours,

Jeffrey Oliveira
